Mill Operator

Originally intended as a remake of #45 "Ground Level", but the mechanism needed space and I had to modify its appearance considerably, so I decided not to use the same name. :)

      I created this as an experiment:
      The bricks represent the numbering of the four mills. Mill 1 is a large mill attached to a small motor; Mill 2 is a large mill attached to a small, balanced motor; Mill 3 (not really a mill ;)) is a control experiment to show that if both motors are of the same size, the top motor wouldn't accelerate. Mill 4 is inverted to show that the top motor doesn't speed up if the base motor is bigger.
      • If you pause M1, its top motor would accelerate. Notice the slightly tilted axis.
      • If you pause M2, it doesn't accelerate because the lower motor is well-balanced and the axis isn't tilted. It appears that the mill only accelerates if the axis is tilted...... o_O
      • Notice that when M2's draggable is raised, M1 stops rotating, yet the two mills are separated enough that they don't have any observable contact surface. :eek:
      • The entire experiment is done in the absence of B.

      ... Notice also that if you subsequently raise M4'S draggable (but only 2 blocks, not all the way), then M1 gets going again!

      Realised i hadn't rated it yet. This one has it all - from multiple solutions to highlighting important bugs.

      @Ricko Yep -- That happens sometimes when you fiddle with the side draggable repeatedly (refer to the above comments). For some reason it unlocks the mechanism without any apparent contact surface :eek::D

      That's a really intriguing level and effect. Despite the fact about the "starter" rotation there's also the speed... Really fast.

      I feel schooled when playing your levels.
      I was able to win without the ball the first time, so I had to replay it for the full experience. I'm glad I did.
      It was fun all around, from the mechanism, the speed of the mill and the solution. Great work!
      Oh, and the comments, quite the insightful read!

      @TR O It was posted while you're taking a break from the forums. :rolleyes: Fun fact: I almost shelved this level because the strange effect wasn't what I initially expected. I just wanted to make a dual mill system that cancels the spin with a counterspin, but instead I found this effect :eek: I then tried to make it stable, but in the end I couldn't do it. So instead I started to think, why not just post my findings? :D

      You need to get B into the door behind the fan. Then onto the elevator (in its down position) which will take you to the top. If the cam thing isn't turning, then use the lower/smaller elevator to help you push the ball (I think this part is the intended solution) .. anyway the ball will then engage the cam. Once the cam is turning, you use it to step up to the win. The turning cam is the big picture goal.
      There are lots of "ifs" and "ands" .. but that's the general principle. Remember, this one is about quantum mechanics, unexpected and not always predictable behaviour. In my opinion, mostly due to the motor-on-motor results of the physics engine.
      Your first win will probably not be the same as your second one :p
